Portugal changes with the seasons.
Not only in the landscapes, the light or the temperature, but also in the small things that start appearing along the way.
In autumn, some of those signs are impossible to miss.
Chestnuts begin to fall from the trees. Medronho starts to colour the countryside. Markets change. Roads change. Tables change.
And suddenly, travelling through Portugal feels different.

Chestnuts Mean Autumn
For many people in Portugal, chestnuts are one of the clearest signs that autumn has arrived.
They appear in markets, at local fairs, on the streets and, of course, roasted.
Simple, warm and unmistakably seasonal.
But chestnuts are also connected to one of Portugal’s best-known autumn traditions: Magusto.
Magusto is traditionally a moment of gathering around roasted chestnuts, often shared with family and friends and accompanied by wine or jeropiga.
More than food, it is a seasonal ritual.
One of those traditions that reminds us that in Portugal, the calendar is often felt through what is growing, cooking and being shared.

Then There Is Medronho
Smaller, brighter and perhaps less familiar to many visitors, medronho is another fruit deeply connected to the Portuguese landscape.
It grows on the strawberry tree, known in Portuguese as medronheiro, and can be found naturally in different parts of the country.
Its red and orange fruits are distinctive, almost impossible to ignore when you come across them.
Medronho can be eaten fresh, but it is especially known for its traditional use in aguardente de medronho, a spirit with strong roots in rural Portugal, particularly in the south.
It is one of those flavours that carries much more than taste.
It carries landscape, tradition and generations of local knowledge.
Sometimes the Best Discoveries Are Small
What makes these moments special is that they are rarely part of a checklist.
You do not usually plan a trip around seeing a chestnut still inside its burr.
You do not necessarily expect to find medronho while walking through the countryside.
But those small discoveries often become part of the memory of the journey.
A tree by the road.
A local fruit.
A tradition someone explains to you.
A flavour you had never tried before.
That is also Portugal.
Discover Portugal Through the Seasons
Every season reveals a different side of the country.
Autumn brings warmer colours, quieter roads, seasonal flavours and traditions that are deeply connected to the land.
And sometimes, slowing down enough to notice these details is what makes travelling feel more meaningful.
At Ride For You Portugal, we believe discovering Portugal is also about noticing what is happening around you.
Not only the landmarks.
But the stories growing beside the road.
